Embarking on Your Nursing Career in the United States

Understanding the NCLEX Exams and Their Significance

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a nationwide examination for aspiring nurses who seek to become licensed practitioners in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Developed and owned by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN), the NCLEX exams are available in two distinct types: the NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and the NCLEX-PN for practical nurses.

These exams are administered in person at numerous NCLEX International Test Centers worldwide, and each nurse is required to pass their respective examinations to earn licensure and legally practice nursing in the United States.

The NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN examinations assess examinees’ foundational understanding of nursing practices and critical thinking abilities, utilizing the knowledge acquired during their registered nursing or vocational nursing education. The ultimate goal of the NCLEX is to ensure that successful candidates can provide safe patient care and make informed nursing judgments.

Navigating the NCLEX US Exam Application Process

The NCSBN Inc. oversees more than 50 State Boards of Nursing (SBON) since each US state has unique NCLEX requirements and qualifications. Consequently, each SBON has a distinct NCLEX registration process and examination fees. As such, one foreign applicant may qualify to take the NCLEX in one state, while another candidate may not, depending on factors like work experience and education level. The typical NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN US exam application process consists of four (4) stages:

Assessment of Prerequisites

NCLEX exam application requirements vary depending on the chosen US state. The first stage of the ELAB Solutions Consult NCLEX exam application involves an agent assessing the applicant to verify eligibility for the NCLEX exam in the selected state.

Examining the Eligibility of the Candidate

The SBON in the desired state will evaluate candidates and their documents to determine eligibility for the NCLEX exam, based on the SBON’s criteria. Approved candidates will receive an Approval notification, allowing them to proceed to Authorization to Test (ATT) registration and await their ATT number.

NCLEX Examination Proper

Upon receiving the ATT notification, candidates can select their preferred NCLEX exam date within the ATT validity period. Numerous printed materials and online review courses are available to help candidates prepare for the exam.

Licensure

After passing the NCLEX, the Board of Nursing will issue the license number. However, some Boards of Nursing do not provide a physical license. Instead, they may issue a digital copy or a license certificate. Additionally, some Boards of Nursing require a Social Security Number (SSN) before issuing the license to successful candidates.

Achieving Licensure and Launching Your Nursing Career in the United States

Some candidates can access their unofficial NCLEX results 48 hours after the exam, though those outside the US may need to wait up to 62 hours before purchasing their exam results. However, candidates are not permitted to practice as licensed or registered nurses until the official NCLEX exam results are released.

The NCLEX exam application process can be overwhelming, particularly for foreign nurses with no prior knowledge of the NCLEX.
