Canada Welcomes Healthcare Workers from Nigeria and Beyond

Canada, known for its welcoming immigration policies, is once again extending its arms, this time to healthcare workers around the world. In an exciting announcement, Canada’s minister of immigration, refugees, and citizenship, Sean Fraser, revealed plans to invite 500 healthcare workers to immigrate into the country via the federal express entry program. Turquoise-White-Gradient-professional-nurse-Instagram-Post-1024x1024 The express entry program is an innovative system designed to attract highly skilled immigrants. And this time, the focus is on healthcare, a sector grappling with serious labor shortages. “We are bringing more healthcare workers to Canada, and we have changed the approach to immigration by bringing an additional focus on certain sectors facing serious labour shortages,” Fraser said. The plan doesn’t stop here. On July 5th, the ministry will extend invitations to an additional 1,500 healthcare workers. Notably, countries like Nigeria stand to benefit from this initiative. Between 2017 and 2022, Canada welcomed approximately 21,000 healthcare workers. Now, the ambitious goal is to onboard around 8,000 new healthcare workers per year. This initiative is set to significantly bolster the Canadian healthcare system. “This announcement will strengthen our healthcare system and help provide more Canadians with the high quality care they deserve,” stated Fraser. He also noted the necessity for faster visa processing times to complement this new system. For Canadian immigration, the previous year has shown promising trends. In 2022, the country accepted 437,120 Permanent Residents (PRs), marking an eight percent increase from 2021. Meanwhile, for Nigeria, the growth rate stood at an impressive 41.9 percent, with the total PRs surging to 22,130 last year. This program is part of Canada’s broader strategy to address its shrinking labor force, which stems from an aging population and lower birth rate. Just last Tuesday, the country announced its first-ever immigration tech talent strategy that will create new job opportunities for foreigners, including Nigerians. It’s a great time for healthcare professionals across the globe, particularly in Nigeria, to explore these immigration opportunities. For those ready to make a life-changing move and enrich the Canadian healthcare system, the opportunity is ripe.
